A piece of paper towel caught fire on the gas, and an 86-year-old neighbor who had recently had a sixfold detour had to pull Sir Michael out of the burning room window.
Register Idler Magazine, the TV personality said he initially tried to put out the flames with a towel, but this only made things worse.
He said, “When the flames licked at the ceiling, I called the emergency services – but the moment we connected, the smoke detector went off and I couldn’t hear a word they said.

“I just noticed something about washing my hands, which made me realize that without my glasses, I would be calling 111 instead of 999.
“But I did wash my hands anyway, and a fantastic stroke of luck eventually broke the loose tap that we had never attached, extinguished the ceiling, and partially extinguished the fire.”
Sir Michael said his elderly neighbor came to his rescue and brought him to safety through the window.
The TV presenter previously said that his heart surgery made him feel like he was a ‘previous Golf GTI’ rather than an ‘old Ford Anglia’.
Tribute: Michael Palin dedicated his Special Recognition Award to his late friend Terry Jones at the January National Television Awards
He has had few public appearances since surgery, but attended this year’s National Television Awards, where he received the Special Recognition Award in January.
Sir Michael was emotional when he dedicated the award to his Monty Python co-star Terry Jones, who died the previous week.
After calling the award a “great honor”, Sir Michael paid tribute to his close friend.
He said: “I want to dedicate this award tonight to someone who taught me more about television than anyone else, my good friend and Python, Terry Jones.
“Anyone who knows or has worked with Terry will be infected by his enthusiasm.”
