Simon replied: “He actually said to me, ‘Have you heard of this band called One Direction, Dad?’
‘For!’ Sian said.
Simon said: ‘And I said, ‘yeah, why?’ and he said, ‘yeah, they’re really good.’ And I said, ‘oh, thank you.’
After finishing third on The X Factor in 2010, One Direction became one of the best-selling boy bands of all time.
After releasing five albums, they have been on an indefinite hiatus since 2016 and all members are pursuing solo careers.
On Wednesday, Simon shared a video walking past a poster of himself promoting his new boy band search and jokingly said, “OMG, who is that handsome man?”
Elsewhere in the interview, Simon admitted that he hasn’t been impressed with all the Britan’s Got Talent series he serves as a lead judge on.

Sian said: ‘They were all elite quality. Some acts she had never seen, like the guys doing taekwondo and kicking all the plates and stuff. You’ve never seen anything like it.
Simon responded: Well, you know, the thing is, when you do these shows, everyone always says, “Yeah, this is the best one ever,” and blah, blah, blah.
‘The truth is, you can’t fake it. Either you like it or you don’t. And I really liked it a lot this year. There have been years when I haven’t liked it.’
He added: ‘I mean, after all the auditions, you sit there and you know who the finalists are, and you’re like, ‘Oh my God.’ Really?’ And the winner was announced and I was like, “Oh, great,” you know? And then I’m leaving.
