Dozens of freight trains use the line every day to travel between Nottingham and Newark, often at speeds of 100 km / h.

Vinny Briggs, Route Level Crossing Manager, said: “Safety is our number one priority and over the years we have worked to balance this with the needs of the Burton Joyce community.

‘We’ve seen too many incidents crossing the footpath in Chestnut Grove where people have misjudged or misused it, and we’ve made the decision to close it.

‘It is never safe to get stuck on a level crossing or on the track of a violation. Some people don’t seem to realize how much danger they are putting themselves into.

‘When the level crossing reopens, it is important that people concentrate, pay attention to the warning signs and cross safely and directly.’
