An artist’s mom creates a small Japanese city out of cardboard boxes for her daughter to sleep in: “I’ve never seen anything like this before”

  • Artist Sherri Madison has created a cardboard city center in her living room
  • The Tokyo-inspired mom’s market was for her daughter’s birthday sleepover

A crafty mum transformed her living room into a mini-town for her daughter’s birthday sleepover using recycled cardboard boxes and gouache paint.

Sherry Madisonfrom Southern California, grew up with military parents who had to move around a lot and left a stack of boxes in their wake — thus she now can’t stand to see cardboard go to waste, and regularly creates art from Amazon boxes.

She recently spent 10 days creating a large Tokyo-themed cartoon”Alley MarketComplete with sliding doors, convenience stores, and windows between each room.

Cherry also focused on the nitty gritty details of the project, including: tiled ceilings, hanging paper lanterns, and artificial bubble tea.

The market was large enough to hold six sleeping bags for adults so that each child would have enough space of their own.

Mother posted several videos From her project on social media.

“This is my Little Tokyo cardboard market for my daughter’s birthday party,” she said. “I’ve been really busy lately, but it’s been great doing a big build.

Sherry jokes that she thinks it might be made out of cardboard.

Each girl at my daughter’s birthday party had her own shop to sleep in, so I cut small windows inside, between each one, so they could see into each other.

The artist used cardboard rivets and hot glue to hold the boxes together.

“But I ended up removing most of the interior walls because they all wanted to be together!”

The artist spoke EXCLUSIVELY to FEMAIL about her thought process when creating such large pieces of art.

I generally don’t work with any kind of plans. I just started with big boxes to get a basic look, then worked my way up to the details.

This should have contained six oversized sleeping bags, so that each girl would have her own space. The girls had so much fun but I also love that they all got to see what can be done with reuse! “

“My mission is to teach people the amazing things that can be done by reusing cardboard that is usually thrown away.”

All of Sherry’s work is made from 100% recycled cardboard.

Sherry doesn't usually work with a concrete plan - she simply creates a vague outline and then focus on the details when the project comes together.

Thousands were amazed at Sherri’s creativity and flocked to her comments in awe.

“Imagine all the stories your kids will one day tell their children about the next level of fun they had with their mom and her creations.”

This is too silly for your child! I’m much better! One woman joked: Could you be my mother?

Definitely one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen! Beautiful details and handwork! You are so talented!

Another added, “Your children will grow up realizing that they can achieve great things if they stick to the task.”

The craftsmanship, the details, the paint, the props! This is where key memories are made.
