Jimmy Garoppolo He’s the Los Angeles Rams’ No. 2 quarterback, but that doesn’t mean the former 49ers quarterback isn’t playing a role in helping his team prepare for Sunday’s matchup against San Francisco at SoFi Stadium.

While Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur believes in Garoppolo’s knowledge 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan downplayed the information his former quarterback can provide on this week’s opponent. Instead, he was more concerned about former 49ers passing game coordinator Mike LaFleur.

“I think it’s an exaggeration,” Shanahan told reporters Friday. “I mean, a little bit more from Mike LaFleur. That started last year, but no, not as much.”

While speaking to reporters on Thursday, LaFleur praised Garoppolo’s impact to help the Rams game plan for their division rival.

“Probably more between Jimmy and Matthew (Stafford), maybe even in the locker room in general,” LaFleur said. “Anytime you’ve had a little bit more input when you’ve been in the locker room and you’ve had the success that Jimmy’s had there, I’m sure there’s some things that haven’t been told to me and things like that. But having Jimmy back now has been great and it’s a benefit.”

Garoppolo spent parts of six seasons with the 49ers, posting a 38-17 record in 55 starts during his tenure in San Francisco.

Whether Garoppolo’s information about the 49ers will make a difference remains to be seen. Sunday’s matchBut Shanahan clearly isn’t worried.
