Liberal senator and former minister Simon Birmingham is to retire from politics after 17 years as a senator for South Australia.

Peter Dutton confirmed the announcement on Thursday afternoon and thanked Senator Birmingham for his dedication to the party.

“I can thank Simon Birmingham who has just announced his retirement as our Senate Opposition Leader,” the Opposition Leader said.

‘Once again, Birmo has a young family and spends more time with them.

“He has given an enormous amount to our country.”
