Saudi Arabia defender Yasser Al-Shahrani undergoes emergency surgery after horrific collision in World Cup win over Argentina… and then sends a message to fans saying ‘my health is good’
Saudi Arabia defender Yasser Al-Shahrani underwent emergency surgery after his horrific crash during a 2-1 win over Argentina on Tuesday.
Al-Shahrani fell to the ground after colliding with goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais in stoppage time and was carried off the pitch on a stretcher.
According to reports in Qatar, he said he suffered a broken jaw, broken facial bones and internal bleeding.

‘Yasser Al-Shahrani underwent successful surgery on his pancreatic gland at the National Guard Hospital in Riyadh,’ the Saudi Federation said on social media.
Al Shahrani then sent a message to reassure his fans about his health.
Al-Shahrani posted a video clip broadcast on the Saudi national team page on Twitter, saying: “I wanted to assure you that my health is good, your prayers are for me and the fans of the Saudi national team deserve to win.”
He is not expected to play in the World Cup again.
Al-Shahrani, 30, was knocked unconscious after colliding with Alowais’ knee while fighting for the ball.

He was able to regain consciousness and stick his thumb up into the crowd as he was led away.
The collision occurred five minutes into eight extra stoppage time when a long ball was played into the Saudi box.
Argentine full-back Nahuel Molina jumped up to head the ball but Alowais punched the ball clear and caught his teammate who was in the middle of the pairing.
Al-Shahrani initially rose to his feet before he was carried off the pitch on a stretcher looking in pain, though he held up his thumb as he was carried off towards the end of their shock win over Argentina.
It was a hard landing and there was no way the Saudi defender could continue.
Saudi Arabia held on to the lead that they had won in surprising fashion in the second half.
Lionel Messi had opened the scoring from the penalty spot after ten minutes before Argentina had three goals disallowed for offside.
