One of the most uncomfortable and revealing episodes since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex abandoned royal duties in 2020 to ‘find freedom’ (and a fortune) hit a red carpet in Los Angeles almost a year ago.
Without Prince Harry’s company, Meghan couldn’t have looked any less regal as she walked the carpet at the Power Of Women event and waited to be interviewed by a Variety reporter, like ANOTHER celebrity.
King Charles’ daughter-in-law posed for photographers like the aspiring star she once was. And, in the most undignified moment of all, another guest eagerly rushed to accompany him.

She posed for photographers like the wannabe star she once was, but then was impatiently rushed by another guest.
Last weekend, Meghan was alone again, on another red carpet in her hometown, competing for attention with some of the guests at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Gala.
This time, however, she had to suffer greater mortification, and the other guests felt free to express their criticism of her.
“There wasn’t a lot of warmth from people when she arrived,” Lizzie Cundy, a British television presenter and socialite, later told me. “He wasn’t there long; he seemed to be there for the photographs.”
Miss Cundy, who the Duchess had befriended before meeting Harry and then “ghosted,” later added of her former friend: “Meghan needs Los Angeles more than Los Angeles needs her.” The people of Los Angeles feel that she has deceived them. Harry and Meghan were loved because they are part of the Royal Family, but they have spoken ill of the royals, who are loved in Los Angeles. It’s a shame, because charity work is where she and Harry do great things.
When Meghan was still a royal, she would never have been subjected to such reception or criticism.
The Duchess of Sussex was alone again, on another red carpet in her hometown, when she attended the Children’s Hospital Gala in Los Angeles last weekend.
Having been named patron of the National Theater by the late Queen Elizabeth, in a move designed to make the former actress feel welcome in Britain, Meghan would be the guest of honor at stage events. She would enter the theater after others had taken their seats and distinguished people would line up to greet her afterwards.
And while the duchess received this supposedly cold reception in Los Angeles, her husband was treated as warmly as ever at an awards ceremony for WellChild, one of the few charities she was able to hold on to after leaving Britain. He remained patron of WellChild because it was not a royal patronage granted by the Monarch.
Harry seemed delighted to meet the brave children awarded at the event in London. Although he often looks sullen at engagements with his wife, the Duke appeared to be back to his old, cheerful self as he joked with young people who had battled serious illnesses at the Royal Lancaster Hotel engagement.
An old friend of Harry’s I spoke to this week said Meghan’s solo outing to Los Angeles emphasizes how much they’ve lost by leaving royal life.
“Imagine the difference if they still worked like royals,” the friend said. ‘They would be the center of attention wherever they went. They would be patrons of organizations and charities, not just guests.
‘I think Harry’s work over the last few weeks with WellChild and Sentebale (the charity he helped set up in 2006 for African orphans, including those living with HIV/AIDS) will have made him realize how much he has lost by moving to America. . ‘
One of the most revealing moments from the Sussexes’ explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021 was one of the least discussed. Harry told the US chat queen they had signed multi-million dollar deals with media giants Netflix and Spotify only because they needed to pay for their security after their money from Britain was cut off.
Harry has been to Lesotho and South Africa, where he visited the Sentebale charity he helped set up in 2006. The joy on his face has been clear.
Harry let slip that he never wanted to become a media mogul; in fact, I couldn’t have been less interested. Meghan, on the other hand, seems to have been interested in returning to show business.
It helps explain why Harry appeared in the pilot episode of his podcasts for Spotify but was conspicuous by his absence in the series that followed.
Over the past few weeks, the joy on Harry’s face has been clear as he returned to his commitments for causes closer to his heart.
Meanwhile, Meghan’s awkward solo appearance was a stark reminder of what she wasted when they fled Britain.
