A vintage biplane landed upside down at Shellharbour Airport on Saturday.

A couple’s scenic flight in a vintage plane almost ended in disaster after it crashed and overturned while trying to land on the runway.

The striped 1951 Boeing Stearman was seen overturned on the runway at Shellharbour Airport in the Llawarra region of New South Wales on Saturday with its wheels pointing skyward.

The pilot and passenger, a couple in their 50s, managed to escape the plane unharmed and without major injuries.

They were treated by paramedics before the woman was taken to Shellharbour Hospital in a stable condition for further observation.

The pilot had just purchased the $200,000 plane and was still learning to fly it when it crashed.

Surprised witness Clinton Down he told 9News It seemed like a “wild ride.”

“I saw the queue go up and around, it was a bit of a shock,” he said.

“Since it’s such an old plane, getting away from something like that is a relief.”

Emergency services were called to the scene where 70 liters of jet fuel had spilled onto the runway.

Firefighters and airport HAZMAT personnel isolated the spill to prevent any hazards before beginning the cleanup process.

The cause of the accident has not yet been determined.
