A rising media star has been tipped to replace ABC News Breakfast presenter Michael Rowland after his shock resignation on air on Monday.
James Glenday, ABC’s 7:00 p.m. news anchor, is the most likely candidate to take the job, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.
Glenday has frequently appeared as a stand-in presenter on the show and is ending his role as a news presenter in Canberra in the coming weeks.
The veteran reporter has extensive political and field experience, having worked as an ABC correspondent in Europe and the United States during his time at the network.
When approached for comment, an ABC spokesperson told the publication that it is “too early to confirm the 2025 schedule.”
Michael, 55, broke the shocking news of his departure to viewers on Monday morning and revealed that his last show would be on Friday, December 13.

“I’m leaving News Breakfast,” Rowland announced.
‘I’m sorry to the viewers for the short notice. I’m not one for long, drawn-out goodbyes and I wanted minimal fuss.
‘I love the job, it’s the best job I’ve had at ABC. In fact, anywhere. But after 15 years of starting at 3 a.m., my body is screaming “enough!” And so does my wife.
‘It has been an immense privilege to be here for 15 years presenting the news to our viewers. For me, that has been by far the most important part of the job.
The veteran journalist presented the centenary of the Gallipoli landings and coverage of the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
Rowland has also served as Lateline’s economics correspondent and state political reporter in both New South Wales and Victoria.
Justin Stevens, ABC news director, said in a statement: “Michael has been instrumental to the success of News Breakfast for the past 15 years, a familiar and trusted face for viewers every morning.
‘His ability to tackle serious reporting and lighter topics, and do it live on television for three hours every morning, demonstrates what an enormous talent he is as a broadcaster.

Meanwhile, Rowland’s ABC News Breakfast co-host Bridget Brennan said it has been “an honor and a privilege” to be alongside him.
“I have seen firsthand his enduring dedication to journalism and public service,” Brennan said in a statement.
‘After 15 years, we Australians will greatly miss his presence each and every morning, but I know we all appreciate the incredible effort he has put into News Breakfast for so long.
‘Michael, I hope the next chapter brings you long nights of sleep and more time to stay up late and take care of your beloved Doggies.’
