If you want to get home safely, a woman is better off driving, research suggests.

Passengers were up to a third less likely to be involved in crashes if the driver was female.

“Female drivers tend to be involved in less serious accidents than men,” say Spanish researchers from the University of Granada, writing in the journal Heliyon.

They analyzed data from 171,230 accidents involving more than 400,000 drivers and passengers.

The results showed that there was a 28 percent lower risk of serious injury in a crash when the driver was a woman.

That percentage rose to 33 percent when only one vehicle was involved.

But the study also found that women involved in accidents were 23 percent more likely to be hospitalized.

One theory is that women may be more physically vulnerable to injury.
