Quibi’s grounded content will be reborn on Roku from May 20

The Roku channel will get its first batch of Quibi shows on May 20, Roku has announced. There will initially be 30 so-called “Roku Originals” available to stream, but Roku says it plans to eventually release all 75 of Quibi’s titles on its service. They can be viewed for free in the US, Canada and the UK, with ads between individual short episodes. Roku announced in January that it would exclusively license Quibi’s library.

Included in this first set of shows are season 7 Reno 911!, the cooking documentary Shape of Pasta, Chrissy’s Court (starring Chrissy Teigen), and that of Kevin Hart The heart. In the US, The Roku Channel is available on iOS, Android, select Samsung TVs, Amazon Fire TV devices, and the Internet, in addition to Roku’s own hardware. Meanwhile, it is available in the UK on Sky Q and Now TV devices, as well as Roku devices.

Some of these shows have big names attached, but that didn’t stop Quibi from being in business after just six months. Despite this failure, Roku claims it is in a much better position to make this content a success than Quibi. For starters, the Roku channel already reaches tens of millions of viewers, and they don’t have to pay anything extra to watch Quibi’s content. Roku also says that Quibi’s short character (each episode lasts 10 to 15 minutes) provides natural breaks for ads.

Aside from inserting ads, Roku says it hasn’t made any major tweaks to Quibi’s content. Of course, watching the TV in your living room means there’s no option to watch the shows in portrait as there was with the Quibi app, but Roku states that the content was filmed in a high enough quality that you shouldn’t be able to tell that they were originally made with phone screens in mind. All content is streamed at 1080p resolution.

Roku announced it would receive an exclusive license to Quibi’s content library in January, and a job listing the following month suggests Roku has plans to develop its own internal content. The Roku channel currently hosts more than 250,000 movies and TV episodes.

These shows are available exclusively on The Roku Channel. In case of Reno 911!, previous seasons are available to watch elsewhere, but the previously Quibi-exclusive Season 7 is now exclusive to Roku.

To coincide with the release of the shows, Roku is discounting some of its players. In the US, the Streaming Stick Plus gets $ 10 off, the Streambar and Roku Ultra $ 30, and the Roku Express $ 5. Deals are active May 16-29.
