  • Barcelona are favorites to sign the midfielder on a free transfer

Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly planning a sensational last minute move to get Georginio Wijnaldum from under Barcelona’s nose for free.

The Dutch midfielder will leave Liverpool at the end of June when his contract expires, having already played his last game for the club, where he said a fond farewell to teammates and supporters alike on the last day of the Premier League season.

It certainly looked like Barcelona would get the 30-year-old on a free transfer as a long-term goal, as the players’ representatives negotiated with Nou Camp chiefs.

However, according to ESPNPSG are poised to flood the Spanish side with a more generous financial package that the report claims will attract him more as Mauricio Pochettino looks to renew his squad to win back the French title next season.

The report claims that Barca are aware of competition from outside the club, and Bayern Munich also thought they were keeping an eye on the situation.

Wijnaldum met the Dutch squad this summer as part of a team aiming for glory at Euro 2020 and admitted he’d been in touch with Barca about a deal, but didn’t rule out moving elsewhere.

Marca quoted the midfielder as saying: ‘I can’t deny the contacts’ [with Barcelona]. I just signed with Liverpool and it’s an interesting situation for a lot of clubs.”

Losing Wijnaldum would be a blow to Barca’s summer transfer plans, with Ronald Koeman already forced to loot largely free transfers given the club’s precarious financial situation.

Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia have already arrived from Manchester City, while the club are still trying to strike a deal for Lyon striker and Wijnaldum’s international team-mate Memphis Depay.

“I am relieved that my players and staff can now fully focus on the new season,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

“The past few weeks have been intense, but I am happy that President Joan Laporta has supported me and that peace has been restored.

“Everyone in the club has the same focus: build a winning Barça and achieve success! #ForçaBarça.’
