In video circulating on social media, Macron, dressed in shirtsleeves, was seen walking towards a crowd of well-wishers who were behind a metal barrier.

The French president reached out to greet a man, wearing a green T-shirt, wearing glasses and a face mask.

The man was heard shouting ‘Down with Macronia’ (‘A Bas La Macronie’) and then slapped Macron in the face.

Two of Macron’s security officers grabbed the man in the green T-shirt, while another led Macron away.

But Macron stayed close to the crowd for a few more seconds and appeared to be talking to someone on the other side of the barrier.

The presidential government said an attempt had been made to attack Macron, but declined to comment further.
