A pregnant obstetrician has revealed how she almost became blind after a parasite was embedded in her contact lens.
Lauren, from Sydney, said her left eye turned red and sore on Christmas Day, but she assumed her contact lens wasn't right.
But only two weeks later, the mother of two was unable to open her left eye of the fear of death before being rushed to hospital for emergency treatment.
& # 39; It was the worst pain I have ever felt in my life & she said 7News.
& # 39; It was unbearable. I could not sit up, I could not open my eye, I had to pry it open. & # 39;
The woman had a parasite called Acanthamoeba keratitis in the cornea of her eye – because samples detected an infection of an organism in tap water.
Against all odds, Lauren has since regained her eyesight after she got the all-clear last month after months of treatments and eye drops
Doctors could not determine how she contracted the serious eye infection, but believed it could be from tap water under her contact lens.
But Lauren said she had always removed her contact lens before taking a shower.
Despite this, she was left destroyed after being told that she was likely to suffer permanent damage.
During the trial, Lauren also learned that she was expecting a baby – and her strong dose of eye drops could potentially endanger her pregnancy.
Fortunately, Lauren has since regained her eyesight after receiving everything last month – and her unborn child remains healthy.
By sharing her story, she wanted to warn people wearing a contact lens.
& # 39; Take the two seconds to get them out, because it's just not worth it & # 39 ;, she said.
