DNA evidence linked the 16-year-old boy to the attacks, which happened a week apart on Oct. 18 and 24, police said.
The boy’s name has not been released as he is a minor and it has not yet been determined whether he will face trial as an adult.
Police said the suspect entered an apartment in the Camden San Paloma apartment complex through an unlocked patio door
He is being held on charges of assault, kidnapping and burglary, and police believe he may have links to more crimes in the area, a local Arizona television station said. KPHO CBS 5†
Police were led to the suspect by a tip from the Scottsdale community, according to Sgt. Mark Clark of the Scottsdale Police Department.
The suspect’s DNA was already in the police database because he has a criminal history that includes crimes related to the cases for which he is currently being held.
Authorities gave no further details about the boy’s past crimes.
They said DNA testing is underway as police collected additional samples from the suspect’s home via a search warrant.
DNA samples that were on file have already been linked to both attacks.
The rape victims were unable to identify the boy from a line of suspects, but police say there are some similarities between his appearance and a composite drawing of the suspect created using the description of her attacker’s first victim.
In both attacks, the attacker entered the apartments on the first floor through unlocked French doors belonging to single women.
In the first attack, which happened at 11pm on Oct. 18, the attacker entered an apartment naked and raped the 49-year-old woman living there, who had just finished showering.
Later he fled, still without clothes on. The second attack took place on October 24 around 11:30 p.m. in an apartment building across the street.
The victim, 29, was sitting on a sofa by the door in a nightgown when the attacker broke in, police said.
On Thursday, the day before police arrested the teen, authorities acquitted a 22-year-old man previously arrested for the same crimes.
Police said forensic evidence did not match DNA samples collected at the crime scene.
The entire community has stood guard as the investigation was underway, with police urging residents to lock their doors and windows and close their blinds.
The suspect was described as a black man about five feet tall with an athletic build.
