Pep Guardiola has branded Cole Palmer “a star player” ahead of the Manchester City academy product returning to the Etihad Stadium for the first time.
Chelsea spent £42.5m on Palmer in the summer after the striker became frustrated with a lack of opportunities during City’s run to the treble last season.
The 21-year-old has flourished at Stamford Bridge, scoring 10 Premier League goals in a run of form that has seen him earn a full England call-up.
“Cole is exceptional,” Guardiola said. “If he plays regularly, yes (he knew he would do well). He had no doubts about his quality.
‘The way he is playing is that of a star player. He wanted the minutes, it was a matter of time to demonstrate his immense quality. He’s a lovely lad and of course I wish him the best at Chelsea.”

Palmer scored a last-minute penalty during November’s dramatic 4-4 draw before learning of his England call-up the following morning.
“It’s going to be a tough game, but I’m looking forward to coming back,” Palmer said.
‘It will be strange, a strange feeling, but I’m looking forward to it. To be honest, I’m very excited, although it will be strange.
The move came after the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva were ahead of Palmer in the pecking order.
Palmer has starred for Chelsea and has already scored 10 goals in the Premier League this season.
Silva suffered a severe knock to his ankle during Tuesday’s Champions League victory in Copenhagen and will be evaluated before Saturday.
Jack Grealish is out with a groin problem, which will likely keep him sidelined for around three weeks, while Josko Gvardiol remains out.
