Internet users – in the United States and elsewhere – took to the comments section to lift the veil on the many behaviors they spotted.
Many users pointed out that Americans’ friendly greetings were what revealed their nationality.
One user said: “In Salzburg I went to get something from the pharmacy. As I was leaving, I said hello to the cashier (thinking there was very little difference between the way I said it and the way the Austrians said it). She immediately started speaking to me in English and I asked her how she knew I spoke English.
“She looked me in the eyes, impassive, and said ‘hello.’ I almost died laughing since I’m a very stereotypical friendly American who says hello exactly like that. One of my favorite memories from this trip.
Someone else wrote: “The sweet smiles you give strangers if you look them in the eye when passing, at least in the Midwest.” (This) was not well received in Germany.
One user added: “I dated a European here in the US. When we walked together, every time I made eye contact with someone on our path, I smiled at them, and they always smiled at me.
“My boyfriend was so confused by all these strangers smiling at me. I kept wondering if I knew all these people. It was hilarious.’
“They smile at strangers,” someone else agreed.
Netizens flooded the comments section and shared their thoughts
One user added: “Very willing to socialize with strangers in settings like bars. Assertive, fair, curious, will be able to support you without knowing you too much. I have had positive experiences.
Others on the web have pointed out the tendency of Americans to tip – which was not a practice in many other countries.
Someone else added: I worked as a cashier at a tourist spot in Paris, I always recognized Americans because they were quite friendly to me and they always left me tips.
“They tip,” one user said.
Others shared random behaviors they had noticed in Americans.
One person said: “An Italian told me that Americans were confidently walking in the wrong direction. »
Another user shared: “If someone asks how far something is, an American will tell you how long it takes you to get there, as opposed to physical distance. »
“From what friends and European travelers have told me, our complete and utter lack of an inner voice,” wrote a third.
“They want ice in their water,” someone else commented.
One comment read: “According to the CIA – when training to be a spy – you have to unlearn how to learn. Americans tend to lean on objects when they are still.
