Alan Cumming Reveals Fans Are Still 'Scared' About His GoldenEye Appearance

Alan Cumming has revealed that people are still going crazy for his role in James Bond film GoldenEye.

The Scottish actor, 69, starred alongside Pierce Brosnan in the 1995 spy film, which marked Pierce’s Bond debut after Timothy Dalton.

In the blockbuster, Alan played Boris Grishenko, a computer programmer affiliated with the Janus crime syndicate, which Bond had been tasked with shutting down.

The film sees 007 fight to stop a rogue former MI6 agent (played by Sean Bean), 006, from using a satellite weapon against London to cause a global financial crisis.

In a new interview, Alan has recalled that fans are still ‘scared’ by his appearance in the film even though he is almost 30 years old.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he said: “It was a long time ago, but people are still scared by it.

‘Maybe it has to do with the video game (GoldenEye), which is iconic.

‘People always ask me to say: “I am invincible”; They still yell at me in the street and all that.

I guess it’s been slowly growing and now it’s become a bit of a catchphrase. It’s great to have a slogan. I love a slogan.’

GoldenEye also starred Robbie Coltrane as a Russian gangster, Minnie Driver as a lover and Famke Janssen as a Georgian fighter pilot.

Judi Dench also played M and made history as the first woman to play the character, replacing Robert Brown.

In 2021, Alan opened up about “feeling suicidal” the day he auditioned for GoldenEye and admitted it was “one of the worst days of my life.”

Speaking on CBS, he said: “I felt very, very, very depressed. Now I think, “Oh, poor thing, you could have said I’m feeling suicidal today.”

He also added that “Hollywood saved him” while talking about his new memoir Baggage: Tales from a Fully Packed Life.
