- Manchester United take on Tottenham at Old Trafford on Wednesday
- Paul Merson thinks it is a ‘must-win game’ for Erik ten Hag’s side against Spurs
- Ten Hag has to make a difficult decision about whether or not to start Cristiano Ronaldo
- Merson thinks that Ronaldo for the English winger Jadon Sancho . must play
Paul Merson has asked Erik ten Hag to choose Cristiano Ronaldo for Jadon Sancho for Manchester United’s game against Tottenham on Wednesday.
Heading into the game at Old Trafford, United have lost just one of their last seven games, but have struggled to score goals in their last two appearances.
They needed a stoppage time winner against Omonia Nicosia last week but failed to break through at home against Newcastle on Sunday. Merson has predicted how United could fare against the Spurs, and he thinks Ronaldo should favor Sancho for his added goal threat.
Cristiano Ronaldo had a frustrating afternoon against Newcastle on Sunday
Paul Merson thinks Ronaldo should still start for Jadon Sancho against Spurs
“I think Cristiano Ronaldo will play this match. I only say that because I know Tottenham will play against everyone behind the ball. Manchester United will have to stop the balls in the penalty area and Ronaldo is the best header in the world,” Merson wrote in his column for Sportskeeda.
“I would leave Jadon Sancho out this week and play Ronaldo, Rashford and Antony up front.”
The Red Devils are currently three points outside the top four and seven points behind Tottenham with a game in hand.
Merson believes that United should not let the gap between itself and the Champions League places grow and considers Wednesday’s game a ‘must-win’ for the men of Ten Hag.
“If United don’t win this game, they will take a draw and a defeat on their journey to Chelsea. They face two of the top four in their next two Premier League games, and it’s a great week for them,” he added.
Merson has labeled United’s match with Tottenham a ‘must-win game’ for Erik ten Hag’s side
“Liverpool could go for their nine points and United could be behind Liverpool by the end of the week. Manchester United have the toughest series of games of anyone this week.
“This is a game you have to win for Manchester United and I don’t think it’s the case for Tottenham. Antonio Conte will want to make sure his team doesn’t lose this game, and with a draw he will be the happiest of the two managers. Tottenham will make sure they don’t lose this game.”
Whether ten Hag will follow Merson’s advice and start Ronaldo remains to be seen. The United boss has been criticized by Rio Ferdinand for knocking out the Portuguese star in the final stages of the deadlock with Newcastle when the side needed a goal.
Ronaldo was visibly upset about his replacement, but ten Hag has since responded by stating that Ronaldo needs to convince him he should play more.
“No player is happy to get out. I understand that. I have no problem. He has to convince me that he should stay,” ten Hag said in his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.
Ten Hag has regularly dropped Ronaldo from his team this season, but the 37-year-old has started United’s last two games in all competitions and with Anthony Martial on the side, it looks like he will make another appearance against Spurs .
