A woman has sparked intense debate after calling a police officer “very unprofessional” for drinking coffee while on duty.

Earlier this week, X user Becky Argyle, from Scotland, posted a photo of an officer drinking from a disposable cup during an event she was attending.

She captioned the image: “I can’t be the only person who thinks it’s very unprofessional for a police officer to be drinking coffee on the street while working and policing an event.”

The post has since racked up more than five million views and prompted other users to come to the officer’s defense.

“God forbid a police officer has a drink while working,” one said sarcastically.

Another joked: ‘You’re right, Becky. She should have been eating a donut along with her coffee.

Meanwhile, a third said: ‘Secret. But don’t tell anyone. I have been known to drink coffee at work. Occasionally two during a long day on guard…’

“I prefer my bobbies to be dehydrated too, Becky,” joked a fourth. ‘This makes them thirst more for justice!’

Jumping to the officer’s defence, one critic wrote: ‘He’s probably been on his feet for six hours with no breaks to sit or even eat anything.

‘When I’m at protests I usually share sweets with the police officers who are close to me because, at the end of the day, they are the ones who keep me safe.

“You may have a different opinion. I consider the police to be part of the community that occasionally deserves a hot drink on a cold, windy, rainy day.”

Although Becky’s post racked up hundreds of responses, the X user only responded to one.

In response to someone speculating that the officer might have been drinking water, he wrote: “It was definitely coffee.”

Last August, Waitrose began offering coffees to on-duty police officers to deter thieves.

The initiative, called “thank you for a latte”, will be available to both police officers and police community support officers.

At John Lewis, free hot drinks and discounted food, including hot meals, will be offered through the staff canteen.

Nicki Juniper, head of security at John Lewis Partnership, hoped the police presence would make thieves think twice before stealing.

He said: “We already have great relationships with some local police forces but we want this to be reflected across all our stores.”

‘Offering these benefits is a win-win; Police already work incredibly hard, so you’ll have more options to take a break while building even better relationships with our frontline teams.

‘In the same way, simply having a police car parked outside can make people think twice before stealing from our branches or becoming aggressive towards our associates.

“Retail crime is a national problem and requires a national solution – people need to wake up and smell the coffee.”
