LSU gymnast Olivia Dunne was proud of her boyfriend Paul Skenes for his performance for the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday afternoon.
Skenes had pitched seven hitless innings, but after throwing 99 pitches, he was pulled for the eighth inning.
On the ESPYs red carpet, Dunne reacted to the news about Paul’s success on the mound that afternoon.
‘You know what, it would have been a huge compliment to say you threw a no-hitter your rookie year.
“But you also have to make that arm last a long time, so I don’t blame them.”
Olivia Dunne shared her thoughts on boyfriend Paul Skenes who nearly threw a no-hitter
Skenes pitched incredibly well, but the Pirates bullpen immediately missed the no-hitter.
Skenes seemed unimpressed after being pulled from the game, despite throwing nearly 100 pitches in his outing.
“I definitely wanted to finish it,” Skenes said after the match.‘Releasing every six days, five days, whatever it is now, I definitely understand that aspect.’
The Pirates immediately gave up on that no-hit effort, blowing it in the eighth inning.
However, they still held on for a 1-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers as closer Aroldis Chapman closed things out in the ninth inning.
But Skenes has been a superstar for the Pirates, far outperforming their shaky bullpen.
He’s been so good that he was not only named an All-Star, but he’s also going to be the starting pitcher for the National League.
