Team Ireland’s Kate O’Connor sits 19th in the overall standings after the first two heptathlon events at the Paris Olympics.

O’Connor is making her Olympic debut and is the latest athlete from Northern Ireland to compete in Paris.

The 23-year-old had a tough start, recording the slowest time in the 100m hurdles at 14.08 seconds.

However, she responded in style in the high jump and took first place in Group A with a season-best height of 1.77 metres.

That left her eighth overall in the high jump, and 19th overall after the opening morning of action.

O’Connor, a Commonwealth Games silver medallist for Northern Ireland, will compete in the shot put and 200 metres later on Thursday.

Her first Olympic campaign will end on Friday in the long jump, javelin and 800 meters.
