NYC driver is charged with manslaughter after killing pedestrian and hurting three others

Ali allegedly hit Esiyok on the Third Avenue crosswalk near 21st Street when Ali rammed into him.

He then swerved and hit an 18-year-old man who was turning down the avenue while riding an electric bicycle.

Ali then reportedly drove onto the sidewalk, his car tired from hitting two other pedestrians before rushing into the back of an unoccupied NYPD van.

Assistant District Attorney Taylor Maurer said, “Ali admitted to being out drinking all day and driving afterwards.

‘Due to [his] decision to drive while intoxicated, there are now four people who suffered physical injuries, two of whom required surgery, and a 23-year-old man died.

According to New York Daily NewsMaurer said Esiyok was “thrown through the air a significant distance”.

The newspaper also reported that Esiyok had stayed at a nearby shelter and was a frequent member of a local church group as a volunteer.

A Gofundme has since been created to help Esiyok’s family with his funeral and has raised over $22,000.

A tribute posted on the fundraiser said: ‘Abdulhekim Esiyok, a beloved member of our community and a humble friend, sadly lost his life in a car accident in Manhattan on June 4th.

“We need your help to pray for him, support his family and ease his pain.”

Ali’s defense attorney, Steven Epstein, said the New York Post: ‘It was a tragic accident which had an impact on the lives of several families.

“We are remorseful for the results of the accident, but ask everyone to keep in mind that not all accidents carry criminal liability, even tragic ones like this.”
