NRL superstar Kalyn Ponga left footy fans in stitches after an awkward slip-up on live television following Newcastle’s 22-20 defeat on Thursday night.
Speaking after the game to Channel Nine’s Danika Mason, the Knights captain made a misstep for good.
Mason somehow maintained his composure as the couple enjoyed a laugh together over the faux pas.
Meanwhile, Ponga coach Adam O’Brien was furious after his team were denied a penalty goal at the death, which if converted, would have sent the match into extra time from the point. gold.
Trailing 22-20, Ponga stormed down the right side but was stopped by his opposite number Joey Manu, with Fetailaga Pauga holding on to the defender as he tried to play the ball at high speed.
The incident slowed the ruck down enough for the Roosters defense to run back, but it was not considered a professional foul.
‘I feel empathy. “These fans know football,” O’Brien said.
“I don’t think I’ve ever heard a stadium so frustrated, I’ve never heard boos like that at the end of a game. There must be something to it.
O’Brien felt the refereeing followed an “issue” and was equally displeased with the decision not to award Knights center Dane Gagai a try due to an apparent obstruction in the second half.
Roosters five-eighth Luke Keary was taken out of the play by decoy halfback Dylan Lucas, but O’Brien felt the visitors still had a chance to tackle Gagai.
“It’s a two-on-two, it’s a missed tackle on the outside. Again, that’s another one. [contentious call],’ he said.
“I’m not taking anything away from the Roosters, but I felt like we didn’t get many rewards.”
