NRL fans blast Cameron Smith after Parramatta Eels v Melbourne Storm monologue

NRL fans are blowing footy big Cameron Smith after he delivered Channel 9’s pithy pre-match monologue ‘BUTCHERED’ ahead of the season opener between Eels and Storm

Cameron Smith has taken a beating on social media after his attempt at a racy pre-match monologue fell through before the NRL season opener.

Melbourne Storm great Smith was on expert duty for Channel 9 ahead of his side’s curtain raiser against the Parramatta Eels, and was charged with the gee-up before the match started – which is widely loved when performed by Phil Gould.

But viewers were less than impressed with Smith’s fumble as he struggled to read the autocue.

A particularly embarrassing moment occurred when Smith left dead air as he struggled to calculate what to say next.

“It’s all up to the teams now,” he says before awkwardly pausing and pointing to the camera. “Get ready, it’s going to be a huge season. It’s all live and free here on Nine.’

Fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on Smith’s pre-match pump-up.

“Cam Smith just slaughtered the pump-up promotion there,” one fan posted online. “Not his biggest fan, but where’s Gus when you need him.”

Another said: ‘Ah, just watching that Cam Smith intro on Channel 9 Rugby League means I won’t be watching Rugby League on 9 this year. Looked second rate.’

“Cam Smith is trying to pull off Phil Gould’s speech…in the words of Gus NO NO NO.”
