Mansfield Town’s manager Nigel Clough has complained about the Football League’s decision to introduce video assistant referees (VAR) for the play-off finals.

Clough’s side will face Port Vale at Wembley on Saturday afternoon for a place in League One, but the ex-Burton Albion boss has expressed his feelings about the decision to use technology in the final at Wembley.

The Premier League is the only division in English football where VAR is used and Clough said Mansfield was “disappointed” that he had not even been consulted about the use of the technology.

He told Sky Sports ahead of the play-off final: ‘I have no idea’ [how VAR will affect this game]† I’m all confused.

“The ref just turned in the team chips and he said ‘it’s normal’ and I said ‘well it’s not for us’ because we are now experiencing something that we have not experienced in 55 games this season.”

He added: “To have not even been consulted as a club, we are very, very disappointed.”

Clough has been consistent in his complaints about the use of the VAR since it was announced earlier this month that it would be used in the Football League play-off finals.

He told reporters on Wednesday: “People are coming in today to explain it all to the players and they can ask questions and stuff.”

Clough’s problem with the technology seems to stem from the perceived way League Two is referenced differently from the Premier League.

“But the way they referee in the Premier League and the slightest touch is completely different than in League Two,” he said.

“So if something is referenced to the VAR, are you going to judge it against League Two standards or Premier League standards.

“We’ve played 48 games in a certain way and that’s why people come in. They should leave it the same as we have had for the 48 games.

“I’d rather just have a good referee who does the final. The referee we had at Northampton made sure everything was right, as the replays proved. He should referee the final, but he has no experience with VAR, so he can’t.”
