R.M. Renfield is a character from the original 19th-century Gothic novel Dracula by Irish author Bram Stoker.
He is introduced to a mental hospital where he is treated for his “eating mania” which causes him to eat insects and then progressively larger animals.
As the novel continues, it is revealed that he is in fact a thriving vampire whose condition can be traced back to someone other than Dracula himself.
In the book, his doctor describes Renfield as having an “optimistic temper” and “great physical strength” but also “excitable” and suffering from “periods of melancholy, ending with a fixed thought which I cannot fathom.”
For part of the novel, Renfield is willing to go along with Dracula’s machinations in order to obtain eternal life by achieving bloodletting.
However, his better nature eventually prevails, and he throws his lot with Van Helsing’s vampire hunters to fight Dracula – with tragic results for himself.

The first screen star to play the new Nicolas Cage was German actor Max Schreck, whose character in the 1922 film Nosferatu was an unauthorized take on Dracula.
Nosferatu created a scandal when Bram Stoker’s widow Florence sued for copyright infringement and burned almost all prints of the film.
However, the remaining print was circulated and copied so that the film went down in history as one of the reigning classics of the silent era.
