Nick Grimshaw has returned to morning radio after six years and announced he will be replacing Lauren Laverne on the Radio 6 show following her battle with cancer.
DJ Lauren, 46, took a break from presenting her BBC shows last year after she was diagnosed with cancer, and Nick replaced her on the morning show.
But amid a series of changes at the station, it was announced on Thursday that Nick will take over the breakfast show full-time from February, with Lauren moving to a weekday mid-morning slot.
Nick’s return to breakfast radio comes five years after he left the Radio 1 Breakfast Show in 2018, declaring at the time that the morning gig was “not a forever job”.
A friend of Nick, 40, told MailOnline: “He is very excited to be back at breakfast, he loves standing in for Lauren and is delighted to be taking on the role full time.”
Lauren headed to the studio to officially hand her the job after six months of filling in for her while she took some time off after being diagnosed with an unknown type of cancer, from which she was cleared in November.

“I’m delighted to say that I will be returning to 6 Music,” Lauren announced. But I won’t have breakfast again. I’m going to make changes, the time is right and the 6 Music Breakfast program has a new presenter.’
Nick replied, “Yeah, that’ll be me.” “As it has been for the past few months, it has been a great honor to look after your show, Lauren, it truly has been.”
After being introduced by Nick as “a special guest considered the most iconic blonde in music,” Lauren said, “It’s so fun to be back in the studio.” He is also described as a guest! It’s wonderful to be here.
“It’s good to be back, I’m doing very, very well. It’s been a difficult time and I’ve missed everyone so much. I have to say a huge thank you to the 6 music listeners who have kept such wonderful messages, literally thousands of messages of love and support.
‘The last time I was in the studio, I guess it would have been August and I was diagnosed with cancer and I knew I was having surgery imminently. And walking out the door of the studio and coming back four months later healthy, but obviously still recovering. Anyone who has been through cancer knows that it takes a long time to completely get back to where you were. But it is very exciting to be back.”
The mother-of-two added: “I enjoyed having you in my kitchen so thank you for that and for stepping in, you’ve been absolutely amazing.” Like I say, anyone who’s been through this knows that it’s very hard to go through cancer, so I’ve gone back to working a bit part-time, I’ve been doing One Show, doing Desert Island Discs, which has been lovely, but it’s good. go back to 6 and be able to talk about going back to 6.

A year later, in 2019, Nick admitted that he was dumped bedridden for days after leaving the program early due to exhaustion.
Lauren revealed in November that she had been given the all-clear, posting a beaming selfie on Instagram wearing a jumper that read: “Life is beautiful.”

The star said: ‘I didn’t realize how tired I was until I stopped.
‘I went on holiday straight after and my family and all my friends came and we got a house, and I slept for days and days and days. I couldn’t get out of bed.’
Reflecting on taking on the afternoon shift, Nick added: “I’ve had more time to myself. It feels less like you’re on this get-up-early machine, so it’s been really good. I feel calmer, less tired.’
In December, Nick took to Instagram to share his gratitude for the time spent filling in for Lauren on the Radio 6 breakfast show.
He wrote: ‘As we approach the end of the year, I wanted to say a huge thank you for listening to me over the past four months at 6. As a super fan of @laurenlaverne and @bbc6music, I was a little worried about covering this. beloved breakfast program even during the first week. It’s what we listen to every morning at home, so having to DO Cloudbusting, Desert Island Disco, People’s Playlist, etc. Instead of wasting time listening in my own kitchen it was a truly out of body experience.
‘It has been a true privilege to spend every day immersed in music. Thank you to Lauren’s excellent team for your kindness, expertise, guidance and friendship. And thank you so much for listening, the lovely morning welcome messages, and for all your stellar sound selections. Tomorrow at dawn we will ride again .’

Former Radio 6 breakfast presenter Lauren was discharged from cancer in November, three months after revealing she had the disease.
Writing on Instagram, she said she felt “more than ever that the little things in life – the connections we make and the care we give each other – are truly the most important things.”
She revealed her diagnosis in August, saying at the time that her cancer had been caught early and that she “hoped to make a full recovery.”
Lauren added the “brilliant medical teams who looked after me so well” and “the thousands of people who sent me such beautiful and encouraging messages.”
“Most of all (thank you) to my family: my two wonderful children and especially my husband Graeme, who was absolutely extraordinary throughout,” she said.
‘It has been a difficult time but it has taught me a lot about what really matters.
“I can’t say that I suddenly regretted not having walked the Inca Trail, even more so that I now see more beauty in ordinary things than I could have imagined.”
Her post also included a photo of her wearing a sweater that said, “Life is beautiful.”
He said in August that his cancer had been discovered “unexpectedly during a screening” and urged anyone who “avoided a test or postponed an appointment” to get checked. Lauren has not specified what type of cancer she was diagnosed with.
