Life in New York isn’t cheap, and with rent prices rising, a mother has left people stunned after revealing she rents an extra apartment a month, just to have more room.
Kristi, a mother of five, regularly shares her daily life with her 366,000 TikTok followers, giving them a taste of what it’s like raising children in the city.
Although they currently live in a three-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment, for which they pay $12,000, the family has now rented a place across the hall.
“We got a one-bedroom, one-bath apartment for $6,000 a month to add extra space.” she shared.
“We’re a blended family, so sometimes we’re seven, sometimes we’re five (but) most of the time we’re six, so we needed some extra space.”

He pointed to the living space, which he said they would use as a “big game room.”
‘We put a bed in the bedroom for visitors like my mom to come and stay, but in complete transparency we use this room primarily as a closet because we cleaned out the closet in our main apartment to make room for our little girl and her crib. ”he added.
“It’s worked out great and we’re very happy to have it.”
He joked that it would also make washing easier, since both units had a built-in washer and dryer.
The mother did not specify where the apartment building was, only that it was in the upper area.
Fans were left perplexed by the family’s decision to spend so much money on rent.
“Or maybe just rent a 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom apartment,” one user suggested.
“What do they do for a living if they can pay $18,000 a month just for rent, not including all other living expenses?” wrote another surprised user.
“$6,000 a month for an arcade,” someone else chimed in.
In another video, the mother said they also had a house in Utah where they regularly spent time.
He pointed to the apartment’s living space, which he said they would use as a “big game room” (file image).
Fans were left baffled by the family’s decision to spend so much money on rent.
in a TikTok at the beginning of the month, Kristi revealed that her husband, David, retired at age 40 and is now a stay-at-home dad.
“I grew up poor,” David explained in a video, describing his family as so poor that a hamburger was considered a luxury.
“(This) taught me to work very hard from a very young age,” he shared. “I started working when I was 12 years old.”
David, who worked in professional sales, said he also started investing early and practicing healthy financial habits.
He started investing in stocks at age 14 and bought his first rental property at age 21, and “never stopped investing.”
The family, who have lived in New York for four years, say they take their time in the city “year after year” and have no plans to leave anytime soon.
“Every year we re-evaluate how everyone is doing physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, how we are doing financially, how the kids are doing academically and socially – we just re-evaluate,” he said.
