Netflix will release 10 fall movies in theaters before they stream

After months of negotiations between Netflix and major theater chains, those of Martin Scorsese The Irishman with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, will get a theatrical debut on November 1 before coming to Netflix on November 27.

The film is just one of the newest to emphasize the ongoing struggle between Netflix and the traditional film industry, as theater chains such as AMC and Regal demand a 90-day period of exclusivity before movies go to home streaming services. Theaters, who want to attract audiences for as long as possible before being able to stream movies at home, are at odds with services such as Netflix, which gives priority to using the new content to retain and attract new subscribers. .

At the same time, Netflix has been actively seeking recognition of prizes and the prestige and free publicity associated with high-profile prize winners. Streaming companies' bid for prices concerns traditionalists such as director Steven Spielberg, who has said that all releases of Netflix & # 39; TV movies & # 39; and have suggested that they should not be eligible for prizes such as Oscars. The attempt to place Netflix movies in theaters is another part of the prize bid, as movie prizes usually require a theatrical run for their candidates. Earlier this year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made a suggestion that the Oscar rules had to be changed to make it harder for films to win prizes.

Netflix plans 10 autumn films with exclusive theatrical release windows prior to their online release for subscribers. The list contains that of Steven Soderbergh The laundry, which will premiere at the cinema on September 7 before going to the streaming service on October 18, and Noah Baumbach Wedding story, which will be exclusive for a month on November 6 before coming out on Netflix on December 6.

For comparison, Netflix released only four films in theaters in 2018: Bird box, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, mowgliand the Academy Award-winning Roma. To be eligible for the Oscars, films must be played in a LA county theater for at least seven days. With The Irishman as a strong candidate for Oscars, it is in Netflix's interest to play by the rules (at least for a few weeks) if it wants to be known for a service that can attract high-profile directors and award-winning films.
