Earlier this week, Ambika (seen on the show) revealed why she turned down the role “again and again.”

Speaking ahead of the show’s launch, she revealed that despite falling in love with Nicholls’ novel in 2009 when she was 14, it was an immediate “no” when she was asked to audition.

“I saw the email notification pop up on my phone: ‘Emma, one day, record yourself,’ and I thought, ‘No, I’m not going to do that,'” she tells Grazia.

‘I turned down the audition again and again for several months. I love the book so much and I just couldn’t see myself playing that role. I thought it was a waste of time. I imagined the disappointment I would experience if I considered this idea.

Ambika also recalled how at the time she was still taking on her biggest role to date, playing medical student Shruti Acharya in the 2022 drama This Is Going To Hurt.

Describing how she felt “overwhelmed” by the attention she received after her acclaimed performance, the actress admitted: “I wanted it all to go away.”

But months after turning down the One Day audition, he had a sudden change of heart and thought, “I’ve made a terrible mistake.”

Lo and behold, she impressed and got the role.

The cast of One Day is rounded out by some big names, including Eleanor Tomlinson and Joely Richardson.

The decades-spanning love story is based on the 2009 novel by David Nicholls, which has sold more than five million copies worldwide.

It is not the first time that the story of Emma and Dexter reaches the screen. A film starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess was released in 2011, but received mixed reviews.
