An angry Netflix user was shocked to learn that subscribers to the streaming platform cannot watch certain movies or shows unless they upgrade their memberships.
The user shared a TikTok video expressing his frustration, declaring that ‘Netflix is dead.’
“You can’t watch things if you don’t pay for the standard ad-free plan,” said user @JustGourm.
He explained that Netflix subscribers must pay at least $15.49 if they want to access all the shows and movies on the platform.
Other TikTok users who watched his video were equally upset by the streamer’s membership price increases.
Netflix viewers expressed frustration over blocked content on their ad-supported plan.
‘I canceled them when they made the last price increase. “These streaming companies have lost their minds,” wrote one commenter.
“Didn’t they used to be $5 a month for really fun shows and movies?” added another.
“Let’s all agree to go back to cable,” wrote a third.
Despite subscriber anger, more than 8 million subscribers joined Netflix during the second quarter of 2024 (April 1 to June 30).
The streamer expects its subscriber numbers in the third quarter to be lower than last year due to its crackdown on password sharing.
Some TikTok commenters compared the price of streaming platforms to that of cable television.
‘With the increases I went from about $18 a month to over $50 for a couple of streaming services. “It’s really not worth the money anymore,” said one.
Another added: ‘That’s why I buy DVDs or wait until it’s on Tubi.’ If I’m desperate, I’ll find it somewhere online.
Some Netflix users have complained about blocked content since last year.
Netflix explained the reason for its decision to block some content for certain subscribers.
“While the vast majority of TV shows and movies are available on an ad-supported plan, a small number are not due to licensing restrictions,” said one note on the platform’s website it reads.
“These titles will appear with a lock icon when you search or browse Netflix.”
Some Netflix users have complained about blocked content since last year.
“I’m fine with a little advertising if it saves me half the price I used to pay, but damn… there are a good amount of movies blocked at that level,” said one user on X. aware in July 2023.

Netflix offers three plans: Standard with ads, Standard and Premium.
The $6.99 a month ad-supported Standard plan allows streamers to watch Netflix content on two devices at the same time, with “all but a few movies and TV shows available.”
The Standard plan costs $15.49 per month and allows the subscriber to watch unlimited movies and TV shows without ads. The user can add a member to their account who does not live with them.
The Premium plan allows a subscriber to stream Netflix on four devices simultaneously and the user has the option to add two members to their account.
Streamers who want a Premium account must spend at least $22.99 per month.
Account holders who want to add additional viewers can do so by paying an additional $7.99 per month.
