Simmons admitted last week that while he remained committed to representing the Boomers at the Olympics, now was not the time, following a string of inconsistent performances following Philadelphia’s early exit from the NBA playoffs.

Boomers coach Brian Goorjian said: “It’s a pretty tough time for him right now and I know it’s something he wanted to do, but the timing just didn’t work out.

“The best thing for everyone right now is that he continues to develop that skill set and improve in some areas for his next NBA season, but the Boomers are always there for him.

“We wanted to let him know that in his time of need, the culture and the guys here are behind him and supporting him.”
