REVEALED: Mutiny in Watford saw ‘Cycling GK’ Ben Foster PAID for ‘breaking promises’ about stopping his ‘completely wrong’, banter-filled YouTube blogs, as their chairman scolds him and Roy Hodgson

  • Ben Foster launched the Cycling GK YouTube channel during the lockdown in 2020
  • It offered fans a behind-the-scenes look at training and game days for players
  • Watford’s ex-goalkeeper continued to make videos, including chest cameras
  • But that seemed to have caused friction between him and the club’s hierarchy
  • Scott Duxbury also criticized Roy Hodgson for not recognizing fans

The Watford chairman has criticized former club goalkeeper Ben Foster for his ‘completely wrong’ YouTube vlogs and claims he was fined for continuing them after promising to stop producing them.

The 39-year-old launched Cycling GK YouTube during the lockdown in 2020, offering fans who were unable to attend matches due to the pandemic a behind-the-scenes look at training and matchdays as a professional footballer.

However, the former Manchester United shot-stopper – who is a free agent after leaving Vicarage Road at the end of the season – continued to produce videos in 2021-22, including chest cameras at Liverpool to film the goalmouth’s action.

“I think some of the videos were disappointing,” Duxbury said.

“Our sporting director, Cristiano Giaretta, met Ben and asked him to stop. He promised he would, but he didn’t. He was fined.

“We want a culture of excellence at Watford. Those videos weren’t.

“I wanted to say publicly at the time that the videos were totally wrong and that we had fined the player and asked him to stop, but I just couldn’t help it.”

Duxbury also scolded former boss Roy Hodgson for ignoring Hornets fans when their relegation was sealed at Crystal Palace, instead blowing a kiss at the home fans at Selhurst Park.

The former England coach’s appearance outraged the fan base and that anger was not helped when the 74-year-old said after the 1-0 defeat that the visiting fans at Palace were ‘unfortunately a little too far out’ to acknowledge.

And Duxbury accused Hodgson of “words failing me” after seeing what he’d done, admitting he was “surprised and disappointed.”

“I tried, after that happened, to allude in my program notes to things that had happened that I couldn’t believe,” added Duxbury.

“Even if your heart as a person belongs to another club, you are still Watford’s coach. You just played a game where you were relegated and you ignore your own fans? No, you have to go to your own fans and your own players. Words failed me.

“I’ve known Roy for many years and I was surprised and disappointed, but I think we have to accept, if not really understand, his explanation.”

Hodgson confirmed in May that he would be leaving the club at the end of the season and he has since been replaced by Rob Edwards.

The former Forest Green Rovers boss will prepare to lead the Hornets from the Championship back to the Premier League the first time he asks.
