Marks and Spencer is aiming to encourage the UK population to eat for better brain health.

In addition to choosing a diet aimed at nourishing the body holistically, the supermarket has launched a new article that aims to improve the cognitive function of the brain.

To meet increased demand for health products in January, a time when many are working on fitness goals, the store this month launched its largest health collection to date, with around 70 new products.

Included in the new line is the Brain Food Brain Ball, described by the chain as “a mixed berry ball, filled with almond butter and topped with raspberry powder.”

High in iron and zinc, the product, currently priced at £1.50 on Ocado, is said to be a “smarter snack option” for hungry shoppers.

While the product has just launched this month, it has been in the works for 12 months, and Kathryn, M&S’s director of product development, and her team have the responsibility of introducing innovative health products.

“January has always been health month in the retail world,” Kathryn said in a new ITV documentary, Inside M&S at New Year.

He added: “Everyone starts to reset again in January, but the reality is that people are looking to put kindness into their lives every day.”

‘We draw inspiration from around the world in terms of what’s happening, it’s a constantly moving environment, which is incredibly exciting.

“But we really need to make sure we’re at the forefront of new market trends, because our customers absolutely expect it.”

He added: “I think a range aimed at brain health is at the top of everyone’s agenda because they want the best cognitive function and it’s been talked about in the media.

“So, although any new product… is risky, I think it’s the right time to launch a range,” Kathryn concluded.

Martha, a member of Kathryn’s team, masterminded the development of the new Brain Food Brain Ball.

Although the process of finding ingredients that matched the health claims was challenging, Martha settled on a recipe of dates, almonds, and berries, with a nut butter filling.

Separately, the documentary revealed the development process of the team behind a variety of other health-focused products, including a pot of blueberry yogurt with spirulina and a latte with lion’s mane, a mushroom promoted with various health benefits.

It comes after a clever mum shared a hack for getting a gift from Marks & Spencer on her birthday.

Sharing the reveal on TikTok, Jo, who goes by the username ThisMumCooks, shared the new way M&S customers can get a free birthday treat.

“M&S has started giving away gifts on your birthday and what’s even better is that you have a whole month to collect them,” she said at the start of the video.

Jo, who has a popular social media following for her tips on cooking, budgeting and finding the best deals, garnered 290,000 views on the video with customers keen to score a free birthday gift.

She explained that shoppers who want to get a free gift should make sure they are registered on the M&S Sparks app.

Like other supermarkets’ rewards programs such as Tesco Clubcard and Sainsbury’s Nectar, the luxury retailer is offering its own Sparks program to those who sign up.

Customers should ensure they fill in all their details, including their birthday, to take full advantage of the offer.

For those enrolled in the rewards program, you’ll be able to select from a variety of gifts at any time during your birthday month, but there’s a potential catch.

Jo urged customers to “be careful” as “if your birthday is at the end of the month you could end up missing out”.

‘So how do you get it? You get it through the Sparks app, which is definitely something worth doing now,” he explained.

For those whose birthday falls towards the end of the month, you’ll need to make sure you access the gift on that same day or earlier in the month, as the gift is only available during that month.

“I’m outside Marks and Spencer’s to go pick mine up and see what we can get,” she said in the clip, before going inside to select the range of celebratory treats.

Heading to the Trafford Center food crawl in Manchester, the TikToker revealed a wide selection of delicious sugary treats that are available as part of the giveaway.

He explained that customers celebrating their birthday can choose their gift from a wide variety of sweets.

“As far as the free birthday gift goes, you can get any of these mini bite jars and there are plenty to choose from.”

In addition to Brain Food Brain Ball, the supermarket has introduced many other healthy food products.

And for those who like chocolate, those celebrating their birthday can also choose an alternative truffle treat.

Jo explained: “Or you can choose a box of Swiss chocolate truffles and they’ve even thought about those who have intolerances or want a plant-based version,” she added, revealing a generous selection of chocolates.

The retailer offers vegan and dairy-free versions of truffles, so everyone can find something to enjoy on their big day.

“I chose the dark chocolate truffles,” the mother revealed, showing the box of orange swirled sweets.

‘As I say, if your birthday is at the end of the month, you only have the month of your birthday to pick it up.

“You can pick it up from the first, even if your birthday is on the 31st,” he confirmed.

A M&S spokesperson told Metro: ‘As part of Sparks, our customer rewards programme, we’re delighted to offer Sparks customers a birthday gift to help them celebrate.

‘Customers will see this in their Sparks center at the beginning of their birthday month. To make sure you don’t miss anything, be sure to update your date of birth in your Sparks profile.

On the M&S website, the Sparks FAQ section adds: “The more you shop at Sparks, the more likely you are to receive a free gift or have us pay for your purchases.”

‘Make sure you also sign up to receive marketing messages from Sparks to make the most of Sparks, as we’ll send you an email and/or message via the M&S app every time a new gift arrives.

“Check your marketing preferences in your M&S account to choose how you would like to hear from us.”

Inside M&S at New Year will air on Tuesday at 9pm on ITV.
