The mother of a girl who was savagely mauled by a Rottweiler in an unprovoked attack has warned parents that the dangerous breed “cannot be trusted.”

Four-year-old Lucia was rushed to hospital after the vicious dog latched onto her neck on a beach in Quindalup, Western Australia, on January 7.

She was swimming in knee-deep water with her three older brothers when the dog suddenly pounced on her, according to her mother Natalie.

Lucia suffered serious injuries when one of the dog’s teeth moved millimeters away from a crucial artery.

Natalie did not give details about where the dog came from or if it was the family pet, but explained that the animal was initially calm when she approached and that the attack came “out of the blue.”

He ran to the aid of his youngest son, but was unable to take the dog from Lucía until another bather intervened.

She was seriously injured after the attack.

‘He was very big, very strong. There was no way we could control what was happening…your instinct as a mother is to get your child out of that situation, but you couldn’t,” Natalie. told 7News.

“He wouldn’t stop, he just kept biting her.”

She said Lucia was a bloody mess when the passer-by rushed to strangle the dog with its own collar and kicked it in the stomach.

“He didn’t really move much,” Natalie said.

The distraught mother ordered her eldest daughter to call an ambulance and asked her son to run and get help from other adults.

Fortunately, the bystander’s wife was a paramedic who took charge of the situation and instructed Natalie how to begin treating the wounds.

They managed to control the bleeding before driving to the Busselton Health Campus Emergency Department.

Lucia was then airlifted to Perth Children’s Hospital, where she underwent several surgeries. she is now recovering at home.

Natalie now wants all parents to understand the dangers Rottweilers pose to children, adding that the attack occurred on a beach where off-leash dogs are allowed.

“(Large dogs) have a propensity to cause large amounts of injury or damage,” he told ABC.

“They are often unpredictable and most of the time when they attack it is unprovoked and I think that is not a risk any responsible parent is willing to take.”

“People need to be armed with the knowledge that ‘this is what these dogs look like and they can’t be trusted.’

The City of Busselton confirmed the dog was subsequently euthanized and launched an investigation.
