A 37-year-old mother and her three children died after their car crashed into a lake in Alabama on the way to a graduation party.

April Whatley and her kids – Mariah Towns, 18; Reginald J. White, 5; and Rosalyn White, 2 – all died when their car turned off a motorway Saturday night and drove into the lake just outside Birmingham.

Police say Whatley was behind the wheel of the 2012 Buick Enclave as she swerved from Interstate 20 to the median strip.

They think the car ran briefly between the crash barriers before crashing into the lake around 11pm.

Authorities are still investigating what caused Whatley to deviate from the road.

First responders found the father on top of the submerged car while trying to free his relatives.

Whatley and her three children were all pronounced dead on the spot.

White was taken to University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital to receive treatment for his injuries, but his condition was not immediately known.

The family had traveled to Atlanta, Georgia for the holiday weekend after Mariah graduated from Minor High School in Adamsville last week.

They were on their way to a graduation party for Mariah. The teenager then planned to leave Atlanta for a graduation trip.

White’s cousin LaSondra Rowel said the crash was the “most tragic event that had happened to their family.”

“I can’t describe what my family is going through right now,” she said The Birmingham News.

Rowel described Whatley as a devoted wife and mother.

“She loved her children, and she loved my cousin,” she said.

Rowel said that Mariah was “always smiling,” RJ had just graduated from prep school, and Rosalyn had just learned to walk.

The family has since set up a GoFundMe page to cover funeral expenses for the four family members.

Mariah’s high school is also planning a vigil for the teen this week.

“We are heartbroken over this tragedy,” said John Huddleston, Jefferson County Schools spokesman.
