A mother would have left her 10-year-old son alone at home all night so she could go to a party on an island.

The mother, 27, was indicted by the police on Wednesday after reportedly not returning from a party on Magnetic Island, offshore Townsville, in Queensland.

She is accused of leaving the house on Tuesday evening, around 9:30 pm, after telling her son that she would be home soon, the Townsville Bulletin reported.

When the child woke up the next morning, he realized that his mother was nowhere to be seen.

Police heard of the incident when they visited Douglas' house on Wednesday morning about an unrelated issue.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Miles, from the Townsville Child Protection Investigation Unit, said the mother had told the police about the party.

& # 39; She suggested arrangements were made for childcare … but studies have shown that this is incorrect, & # 39; he said.

This is the third time the mother has left her son unattended, the police will claim.

In Queensland, it is illegal to leave a child under the age of 12 alone.

"A person who, with the legal care or accusation of a child under the age of 12, leaves the child for an unreasonable time without making reasonable arrangements for the supervision and care of the child commits a crime at that time," the law says .

Mr. Miles said that parents often think that their children under 12 are capable of taking care of themselves, but that is not the case.

& # 39; The reality is that many people think it's good because & # 39; my child knows what to do, I said what to do & # 39;, & # 39; he said.

& # 39; But at the end of the day, children under the age of 12 are ill-equipped to take care of themselves and / or to care for younger siblings, and they should not be left in that kind of circumstances. & # 39;

Detectives are expected to investigate whether the mother has left her son at home more than three times.

She was charged with three counts of leaving a child under 12 without a bond and received bail.

She appears in Townsville on June 26.
