There is nothing better than technology that just works. The satisfying pleasure that comes with transferring files via AirDrop, the relief when a new pair of wireless earbuds automatically pops up on a phone screen and asks to connect without opening the Bluetooth settings. These moments are still rare, but when they do occur, it feels like I’m living in the future promised to me. One of seamless connection and endless possibilities.
And the iPhone’s MagSafe (not to be confused with the old MacBook MagSafe, RIP), it just works.
Known for its high-quality phone lenses and cases, Moment has always had a strong focus on creating products for the photo or video maker. And the new range of MagSafe accessories has something for all levels of creativity. From a car vent mount to a multi-threaded mount for attaching other accessories, there’s a way to attach an iPhone 12 or newer to just about anything. More importantly, you can even mount more stuff on the phone itself through the Moment accessories. The range starts at $ 19.99 for a standard wall mount puck and goes up to $ 59.99 for the tripod mount adapter.
Apple’s own MagSafe wallet accessory notoriously didn’t provide enough power to stay on the back of the iPhone when the device was taken out of a pocket. And if you’ve used the MagSafe charger, you might think these magnets aren’t strong enough to hold your device out in front of you on a tripod. But Moment developed its (M) Force magnet array that claims to use custom tuned magnets with a grippy backer pad for added strength to increase the holding power of Apple’s base system.
When I received these supports I attached them to the outside of my metal file cabinet for safekeeping and was pleasantly surprised at how difficult it was to pull them off the side of the cabinet when I started using them. And during my testing, my phone stayed glued to the mounts no matter what they were mounted on. Pulling the phone off these brackets was easy too; with a small twist, the device disconnects.
Moment’s MagSafe accessories work on a bare iPhone 12 or later or in a MagSafe compatible case. I was able to try out Moment’s iPhone 12 Pro Thin Case with MagSafe and found it to be as strong as the bare phone. Moment’s cases also allow you to attach their range of lenses to your camera’s wide-angle and telephoto sensors. Moment has also included MagSafe technology in cases for the Galaxy S21 series, which you can pre-order now for $ 49.99, and they should provide a similar experience to the iPhone’s built-in magnets.
Moment currently offers an adhesive wall mount, an automotive vent mount, a cold shoe mount, a cold shoe and ¼ ”thread mount in both portrait and landscape orientation, a ¼” thread mount and a multi-thread mount. The pucks themselves are stainless steel discs with a matte finish. They are just enough heavy: they feel durable and are ready to use while maintaining an extremely strong magnetic connection with the iPhone 12 Pro I used.
The best thing about using these holders, and MagSafe in general, is the ease with which you can quickly set up and remove your phone from various accessories. I am used to using holders that grip the sides of my phone. For example, if I mount my phone on a tripod, I had to attach it to the holder first, which is a two-step process: first the phone goes into the holder and then you have to close the sides of the holder to hold the phone . None of this process seemed to be too big of a problem until I didn’t have to do it anymore.
Being able to pull my phone off a tripod seamlessly, even with a light or microphone attached via a cold shoe, is the time-saving, hassle-free experience I never knew I needed. I literally throw my phone on the puck and I’m good to go. And it feels really good to know that I could answer the phone halfway through the recording without putting a whole rig against my ear with it.
Moment’s MagSafe accessories are available now, although part of the line is currently on backorder.
