Millions of pounds go up in smoke: The moment a massive fire destroys two luxury superyachts and a tourist boat in a Greek port

This is the moment two luxury yachts and a tourist boat were destroyed in an inferno in a Greek port.

Shocking images show a plume of dark smoke rising into the night sky last night as flames engulfed boats at Marina Zea in Piraeus.

Explosions could be heard as flames engulfed the boats, which included a 139ft-long superyacht costing almost £70,000 a week to rent, a 108ft superyacht worth more than £6.5m, as well as the tour boat, according to local media reports.

Ten vehicles with 26 firefighters were called to tackle the raging inferno, working desperately through the night to control the spread in the early hours of this morning.

Firefighters were seen spraying water on the wreckage of one of the boats late on Thursday, while the coastguard picked up ten people trapped in the thick smoke from the nearby dock and took them to safety.

The fire is believed to have started on the tour boat before spreading to the two yachts, although authorities have not yet been able to identify the cause.

Authorities said there were no people on board the vessels when the fire broke out.

One firefighter had to be hospitalized for respiratory problems after battling the blaze, but no one else was injured in the massive fire.

Ten fire engines, three coast guard boats, a floating fire truck and private divers were needed to put out the fire by Thursday evening.

A Greek coast guard spokesman told local media that the fire was successfully extinguished in the early hours of Friday, shortly after 1 a.m.

This morning, the port had been blocked with a floating barrier to prevent marine pollution from fuel and debris still in the water.

Firefighters managed to prevent the blaze from spreading to more vessels, and the fire service and coast guard remained on site throughout the day to monitor the situation.

The boats that caught fire are the 108-foot-long motor yacht ‘O’Riana’ and the 139-foot-long ‘Libra Y’, and both have reportedly sunk.

Built by Golden Yachts in 2024, superyacht O’Riana features a stunning, all-new interior and exterior spread over three decks and can accommodate ten guests in five cabins.

Built by Picchiotti in 1977, the Italian superyacht Libra Y can accommodate up to ten guests and has accommodation for eight crew members.

The third yacht is believed to be a commercial tourist boat and the fire reportedly started on it.

This comes just hours after a stunning Italian superyacht sank off an idyllic Greek resort island after a crew member left a side door open.

The 150ft megayacht ‘Ethos’, which costs charterers a whopping £180,000 a week, was spotted taking on water off the coast of Kefalonia while in Paleokaravo Bay.

A diver has been called in to explore local reefs as shipwreck officials continue to monitor efforts to recover the yacht after it ran aground in Evretis Bay, where it was anchored.

But it was later revealed that the break-in occurred after one of the crew members left a side door open and did not have time to close it once the weather “changed,” according to local media. reports.

The five tourists on board have disembarked safely along with the five crew members on board, who are members of the yacht’s hotel staff, Protothema reported yesterday.

The award-winning Maltese-flagged yacht is chartered to a maximum of 12 guests looking for a “relaxed” charter experience.

Featuring five cabins, an onboard gym, a jacuzzi on deck and jet skis, it promises guests “exceptional levels of comfort both at anchor and underway.”

Shocking images showed the boat lopsided in the blue waters around Kefalonia, a popular island in the Ionian Sea known as the setting for Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.

A private boat, shown in the footage, was reportedly on site as port guards monitored the situation.

The cause of the incident has not yet been determined, local outlet Protothema reports.
