- Police arrived at the man’s home in Herne, Germany, around 2am on Tuesday.
- They said the dog “is approximately the size of a Jack Russell terrier” and that, while they were keeping lines of inquiry open, it was likely the cause of the injury.
A man suffered a terrifying ordeal in Germany this week when his “Jack Russel-sized” dog bit off his penis and ate it, police said.
Neighbors alerted police early Tuesday morning due to the dog’s incessant barking coming from the man’s home around 2 a.m.
Upon arriving at the property, a single-family home in Herne, northwest Germany, rescuers heard moans of pain coming from inside.
At that point, they broke down the door and found the 66-year-old man and his dog.
Police quickly realized the man’s life was in danger and rushed him to the hospital.

According to the German tabloid Bild, neither the man’s penis nor “any instrument of crime” have so far been recovered from the crime scene.
The victim has also not been able to provide information herself due to her health.
According to authorities, the most likely hypothesis being considered is that the dog was the cause of the man’s injuries.
Police First Chief Inspector Frank Lemanis told Bild that the man went into an induced coma upon arrival at the hospital.
Lemanis of the Bochum police told the German tabloid: “Doctors have put the man in an artificial coma.” We hope to interview you soon.
‘One hypothesis, of course, is that the dog, which is about the size of a Jack Russell Terrier, bit the penis and ate it. The wound could also be a bite.
“But a sexual accident or a crime is also possible,” he said.
Although the incident occurred on Monday night, police are now making the sensitive case public in a witness appeal.
Bild reports that a homicide squad has taken over the case to “clarify the crime, which until now is completely open.”
If the police chief’s hypothesis were true, it would not be the first time an incident of this type has been reported.

In 2012, German media reported that a 61-year-old Austrian man was attacked by a loose dog that also bit his genitals.
The man was working on his bike when he was attacked.
He was also rushed to the hospital, where, after an operation that lasted several hours, surgeons were able to save the man’s genitals.
The dog and its owner were never found.
