Shoppers have returned to Waitrose as struggling Asda continues to lose customers.
In a closely watched update on the state of the supermarket sector, research firm NIQ said Waitrose sales rose 3.6 per cent in the 12 weeks to July 13 compared with the same period a year earlier.

However, Asda’s growth is stagnating, with sales down 5.9% on last year. The supermarket’s market share has also fallen to 12% from 13.1% the year before.
Asda has been under pressure from discount chains Aldi and Lidl since a £6.8bn takeover led by the Issa brothers left it with huge debts.
Co-owner Mohsin Issa has vowed to restore Asda to its position as the UK’s second-biggest food retailer. But retail experts say it will struggle to return to its former glory.
