A “catty” wedding guest has been criticized for turning up to a friend’s wedding in a long white dress.

Earlier this week, a Reddit user posted a photo of a recent bride, believed to be from the US, and the anonymous guest.

While the bride opted for a white dress with a plunging neckline and floral appliqués, the guest opted for a floor-length silk strapless dress and white shoes.

Inviting others to comment on the guest’s attire, the user wrote on the ‘wedding shaming’ forum: ‘The bride is on the left and her friend is on the right and not with the wedding party.

“The dress she (wears) was all her choice.”

Since being shared two days ago, the post has racked up more than 1,600 ‘upvotes’ and 144 split user comments.

While some labeled the guest “selfish” and “malicious,” others initially confused her with the bride.

One responded: ‘I thought it was two girlfriends looking at the photo.

“If my best friend had done that at my wedding, I would be so angry.”

Echoing this sentiment, another added: “I thought they were a couple and I thought it was cute until I realized what (Reddit forum) I’m on.”

Taking the bride’s side, a third said: “This is exactly what they mean by not wearing white to a wedding.” They are both wedding dresses.

A fourth, criticizing the guest’s outfit, responded: “To wear white to someone else’s wedding, you have to be as dumb as a box of frogs or be malicious.”

“Damn, she didn’t even try to accessorize her outfit with non-bridal accessories i.e. sparkly scarf, bag, shoes, jewelry,” added a fifth.

Trying to defend the guest, another user questioned whether the strapless dress was actually very pale pink.

They said, ‘I wonder if it wouldn’t look so bad in person.’

Another added: “If I zoom out I can see a slight pinkish tint to the dress on the right.” It’s subtle, but it’s there.”

“Body language is warm and friendly,” said a third. “It only matters if the girlfriend cared.”

Meanwhile, a fourth speculated: ‘It also looks like an ocean in the background so maybe it’s at a resort?’

“I feel like I’ve seen too many weddings on the beach or at resorts where the guests wear white.”
