As the summer months quickly approach, McDonald’s is gearing up for a season of giving, and this week is no exception.

This Wednesday, May 22, the fast food giant will be giving away Chicken McNuggets to anyone who places an order through the company’s mobile app.

As prices across the food sector continue to skyrocket, the burger joint is looking to reward loyal customers during the weekday giveaway.

Participating restaurants’ one-day deal is for free six-piece Chicken McNuggets for those who download the app and join MyMcDonald’s Rewards.

No purchase is necessary and adding one of the fast food giant’s signature sauces to your order also comes at no additional cost.

The company, whose prices have risen in some places in recent years, says Wednesday’s sale is just the beginning of a long summer of deals.

A McDonald’s spokesperson said the company aims to offer special deals to customers in addition to its standard affordable prices.

Currently, about 90 percent of McDonald’s franchisees in the United States offer meal packages for $4 or less, the spokesperson said, although not long ago the beloved burger institution came under fire online for offering its classic package : A Big Mac, fries, and a drink, for a cool $18 at some places.

The offer is eligible at participating restaurants for anyone who orders through the McDonald's app.

To address concerns sparked by an overall “affordability” crisis and declining sales among low-income and other customers, McDonald’s plans to introduce a $5 meal deal this summer.

The meal is planned to include a four-piece Chicken McNugget, fries, a small drink and a McDouble burger or McChicken sandwich.

Meal deals have become a renewed focus for some popular chains as skyrocketing prices become fodder for the Internet chattering class.

In a recent “viral moment,” burger chain Five Guys was roasted for a customer’s $24 bill for a single meal.

Chris Kempczinski, CEO and president of McDonald’s, recently spoke during a call with investors about the company’s attitude toward customers who have become more demanding with every dollar they spend in a difficult economy.

“Consumers continue to be even more demanding with every dollar they spend as they face high prices on their everyday spending, which is putting pressure on the (quick-service restaurant) industry,” he said.

He underscored the need for a “nationwide value message” for the company as average consumers continue to grapple with inflationary prices that are squeezing their ability to afford a lifestyle to which they have become accustomed.

Some parts of the United States are making this an even bigger challenge for ordinary Americans, such as in California, where the minimum wage recently increased to $20, forcing most fast food restaurants to at least consider increase their prices.
