Maurizio Sarri may feel a sore head today after the Lazio boss was swept out by a Udinese player on Tuesday night in his side’s Coppa Italia last-16 win.

With the game level at 0-0 in extra time, Sarri, 63, was engrossed in the action unfolding before him on the sidelines.

As a result, he didn’t have time to get out of his way when Udinese star Ignacio Pussetto – on loan from Watford – charged at him.

Pussetto was in the midst of a battle for possession with Lazio’s Manuel Lazzari, but the latter won the game and inadvertently steered the 26-year-old towards his manager.

The former Chelsea boss was helpless when he took a large shoulder against his chin, causing him to fall onto the turf as his goggles flew into the air.

Pussetto was also sent prostrate in what appeared to be a heavy impact.

Fortunately, Sarri suffered no permanent damage and even saw the funny side of the incident: He hugged the Udinese star before picking up his glasses and holding them up with a smile on his face.

Ciro Immobile helped soften his manager’s blow by giving the winner safe passage to the quarter-finals of the competition in the 106th minute of the game for Lazio.

After the game Sarri joked to the media: ‘It was a good test of my current fitness! I want to point out that I was the first to get up again.’

Sarri returned to management last summer, taking the job at Lazio following his resignation from Juventus in 2020, and his side are currently eighth in Serie A behind Jose Mourinho’s Roma.
