Getafe coach José Bordalás claims that Mason Greenwood is “calm” in the face of insults from rival fans and wants to keep the “exemplary” exile from Manchester United next season.
Striker Greenwood, 22, scored 10 goals and contributed six assists for Getafe during his loan spell in Spain this season, including a brace in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Almeria.
But Greenwood was attacked by Real Sociedad fans who branded him a “rapist” and told him to “commit suicide” during a LaLiga match the previous weekend.
Osasuna fans chanted ‘Greenwood, die’ during their games both home and away to Getafe this season.
The footballer was charged with attempted rape, assault and coercive behavior in October 2022, but the case against him was dropped in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew.
Mason Greenwood has enjoyed a successful loan at Getafe and now has 10 goals
His future remains up in the air as Manchester United prepare to decide their next steps.
Getafe coach José Bordalás stated that Greenwood’s behavior had been “exemplary” during the loan
United also carried out their own internal investigation into the matter, concluding it would be better if the £75,000-a-week striker played elsewhere.
His successful loan spell at Getafe means United have received a lot of interest from clubs both in England and across Europe wanting to buy Greenwood or take him on loan.
Regarding the insults directed at Greenwood, Bordalás said brand: ‘He’s calm, he’s happy, they treat him very well. The boy has had exemplary behavior to this day and his classmates help him.
‘I’m sure the chants affect him. You know my opinion, I am against any insult, whoever the player is. I can not say anything more.
Regarding Greenwood’s future, the Getafe coach added: “We have not spoken yet, he is in the same situation as the rest of those on loan and it is important to finish as well as possible.”
‘We have to finish with a good image and good feelings for them and the club.
‘When everything is defined, it will be time to get down to work to see if Mason will be able to stay one more year or not. “He will depend on the club and the decision he makes.”
United may want Greenwood to play in the Champions League next season to maintain or increase his transfer value ahead of a future sale, if interest manifests.

United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe left the door open for a possible Greenwood return
Getafe is currently 10th in the LaLiga standings and could still qualify for the Conference League next season.
After scoring two goals in Almeria, Greenwood said: “I feel very happy now and I am happy that my goals contributed to today’s victory.”
“I’m happy for the team, there’s been a lot of hard work in training sessions and stuff, so to get this win is a good feeling for us.”
“I feel like I’ve had a good season here so far and I just want to finish as strong as possible and get as many wins as possible to move further up the table.”
Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his management team are yet to make a final decision on his future and are still reviewing extensive evidence gathered during the club’s internal investigation.
The INEOS CEO had previously left the door open to a possible return, despite indications from the club that he would not play for United again.
Greenwood has a contract with the Red Devils until 2025. His deal also includes a clause allowing Erik ten Hag’s side to extend his stay at Old Trafford for another 12 months.
