The North London side are currently pushing to sign Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez on a £30m deal and if the Argentine joins a move for Tavares could be ratified.

Initial talks have already taken place with Arsenal who are willing to offer around £25million for the Argentina international, but Ajax has rejected that amount and wants more knowing other clubs are willing to offer.

The 24-year-old can play as a central defender, left back and central midfield.

Portuguese left-back Tavares has not always performed consistently as a replacement for the injured Kieran Tierney in the Gunners’ backline.

Tavares, who signed for £8 million from Benfica last July, made 28 appearances in his first season with the Emirates, scoring one goal and providing two assists. He played eight times for Portugal at U21 level.

His most important part of regular time for Mikel Arteta’s side came when Scottish international Tierney, the club’s first-choice left-back, was sidelined by injury.

Tavares played six consecutive Premier League games between late October and early December due to an ankle problem.

He then sat back on the bench until the final weeks of the campaign, when Tierney suffered a serious knee injury.

Reports in Italy have also suggested Atalanta is interested in a potential deal for Tavares – most likely a loan – as they search for a replacement for Robin Gosens, who signed for Inter Milan in January.

Gazzetta dello Sport reported last week that negotiations with Arsenal may not be easy, but Atalanta believe there is a possibility of closing the deal for next season.
