Man makes shocking 100-year-old discovery hidden in his bathroom ceiling

A man was stunned to find a time capsule from more than 100 years ago in the roof of his house, containing old newspaper clippings, rusty toys, photographs and a handwritten letter from the early 20th century.

Jesse Leitch of Grand Rapids, Michigan, made the surprising discovery when contractors came to install some new pipes after he had heating problems in his home.

While workers were “cutting through the roof over their bathroom,” they came across a large number of objects left there by previous residents, dating back more than a century.

Jesse spoke about the “really cool” find with ABC 13 On your side recently.

‘Basically, while they were cutting the ceiling over the bathroom [they found the stuff]. It wasn’t in a box, it was just all these things piled up,” she explained.

“I’ve always thought about doing things like that. You know, if we renovate the place, we leave something on the wall for the next guy.

“I just thought it was extremely cool and gave me a connection to the [house].’

Jesse also talked about this with Fox Newsexplaining that there were 12 articles in total.

Among the items left was a newspaper from 1913 and a business card from a local music store, which after some digging he discovered had closed in 1907.

Additionally, there was a handwritten letter sent by someone named Gertrude to another person named Ruth.

‘Hello Ruth. “This is what Ethel looks like now with her hair up in electric curlers,” Gertrude wrote, according to Fox, in the note, alongside a drawing of a woman with her hair standing on end.

—Do you remember Helena Stuart? Well, she says “Hello.” Anna too. If any of the teachers see Ethel, he will take her to the museum.

Jesse told the publication that they were able to locate a headstone of someone in Michigan named Helen Stuart, who had died in 1996.

Also in the group of items was a small cast iron frying pan, which he believed must have belonged to a doll set based on its size, part of a music box, and some dominoes.

“I think we want to clean the rust off of it and try cooking some small foods with it and see how it works,” Jesse told ABC of the pan.

“Obviously some kid who lived here thought it was important that these things stay for the next guy.”

He said he plans to display some of the items in his home and offer the rest to the Grand Rapids Public Museum.

He also wants to make his own time capsule now and place it in the hole in the ceiling before they fix it.

‘I made some music that we put on vinyl records. And I think that [might be] “It’s a good way to preserve music for the future,” he told Fox.
