An allegedly armed man pointed a gun at police before being shot to death outside a regional hospital.
The confrontation unfolded in the car park of Manning Base Hospital in Taree, on the New South Wales north coast, at around 12.55pm on Thursday.
“The man allegedly pointed a firearm at the officers present and the police shot him,” a police statement read.
‘Officers immediately rendered assistance to the man prior to the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics.
“The man, believed to be in his 30s, was taken to hospital where he died a short time later.”
No police officers or other members of the public were physically injured.
“There were a lot of people around,” a witness told Nine News.
Shortly before the incident, police were called to Rouse St in nearby Wingham, following reports that a man had shot into the air.

Those calls came five minutes after police were called to nearby Summerville Street to conduct a welfare check.
Wingham is located 8.5 km west of Taree.
Manning-Great Lakes officers attended the scene on Rouse St and conducted a search of the area before being called to attend the hospital.
A critical incident team from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will now investigate what happened.
The investigation will also be subject to independent review.
